A superb sprinter and true sportsman, David “Whip” Lash represented Canada in both track and field and wheelchair basketball at the 1988 Seoul Paralympics. He served on the International Paralympic committee in 1984. Both an avid player and coach, his home team, the Toronto Spitfires, went undefeated during the 2005 Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League season. They went on to capture the gold at the Finals. After his passing, the CWBL renamed the Spitfires the Vaughn City Lashers in his name.

In terms of his competitive spirit, Lasher teammate, Chris Stoddart, said. “Always humble, [and] always friendly regardless of outcome, he was a true sportsman and great guy. A find example of what a Canadian wheelchair athlete strives to be.”
